Ubuntu Linux 22.04 Wi-Fi Issues Fixed

July 21, 2022

I have an old Microsoft Surface Pro 2 2-in-1. The device originally shipped with Windows 8, and I later upgraded to Windows 10, but unfortunately the device can not be upgraded to Windows 11. After a few years with Windows 10 and after numerous updates, patches, etc., the device wouldn’t boot up and if it did boot up, it was displaying hardware and software issue warnings. I wiped the 512 gb SSD clean and experimented with several Linux distributions, eventually settling on Ubuntu Linux 22.04. Initially all worked well, except that the wi-fi connection would randomly drop after some time. After some web searching, I learned that the kernel might be the issue, and I followed the guidance from this website to upgrade my kernel:

I updated to a newer kernel and now the wi-fi has been solid for a few days. I may eventually have to migrate to Windows 11 on another device/machine for work reasons, but Ubuntu Linux 22.04 should extend my Surface Pro 2 life for a few years. I think that’s good for the environment and my wallet.
